Important Tips for Tattoo Aftercare

Getting a tattoo is an exciting time for millions of people. Whether it’s your first tattoo or you are simply adding to your collection, the aftercare process is always the same. If you don’t properly care for your tattoo it could become infected. This is not something you want to mess around with either. Here are some important tips for tattoo aftercare.

Follow Instructions

Follow the instructions regarding the bandage given to you by the artist. He or she will know what is best for your tattoo. You might only need to leave the bandage on for an hour. For other tattoos the bandage might have to be left on for the rest of the day. Whichever it is, be sure to do as told.

Wash the Area

Once you remove the bandage you should wash the area thoroughly. Be sure you are gentle when doing so and use warm water and red soap. This will help to get rid of any plasma and dried blood. Once done washing you can gently dry the area by patting it with a clean paper towel. Never rub the area when drying.

Use Lotion

You can use a very small amount of lotion on your new tattoo. This should only be applied once the area has been cleaned and dried completely. Rub the lotion on as gently as possible. This helps keep the skin free from infection. It should take anywhere from two to four weeks for the tattoo to heal completely.

Avoid the Sun, Sand, and Water

If you get a new tattoo in the middle of the summer you will have to stay away from direct sunlight, the sand, and the water. This includes lakes, ponds, rivers, the ocean and the pool. All of these bodies of water can contain bacteria that can cause an infection.

Don’t Pick

Never pick the dry skin or scabs that form on or around the tattoo. This can delay the time it takes for the tattoo to heal and can lead to infection.
